University High School

On July 15, 1909, the Kansas Board of Regents formally organized the School of Education. Up until that time it had been a department within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Oread Training School, also known in later years as the Oread High School and the University High School, was established in June 1911. Its purpose was as an experimental school in which to provide practice teaching and try new methods. The four-year high school usually had between one hundred and one hundred twenty students enrolled. The school closed in 1950 because large enrollments after World War II found the school to be too small for teaching-practice courses and the University could not afford to build extensive additions.
